I know exactly how you feel. . . .this is one of the phobias I have too- & wish that I didn't.

I would recommend some counseling if it truly troubles & makes life difficult for you. There is therapy available for those who suffer from phobias.

Even I have a similar phobia. Balloons scare me, specially the ones that are partly deflated and are wrinkled. I think thats unusual. It was not like this always. As a child, I use to love them and play with them. But, I dont know when did I develop this fear. It even surprised me when I discovered that I am afraid of balloons. I dont like sharing the fact with anybody. But, it is not a secret now. Slowly all my near ones have come to know about it. Thinking about balloons give me a kind of restlessness. Can I ever get rid of it?

A specific phobia is a generic term for any kind of anxiety disorder that amount to an unreasonable or irrational fear related to exposure to specific objects (LIKE BALLOONS) or situations. As a result, the affected persons tend to actively avoid direct contact with the objects or situations, and in severe cases any mention or depiction of them.

It seems to be innacurate that any fear which is focused on a dangerous subject (ie heights, deep water, large animals, guns, fire, etcetera,) should be called a phobia. The expression 'healthy fear of ---' comes to mind.

The fear or anxiety may be triggered both by the presence and the anticipation of the specific object or situation. A person who encounters that of which they are phobic will often show signs of fear or express discomfort. In some cases it can result in a panic attack. In most cases of adults, this kind of phobia is consciously recognized by the person; still, anxiety and avoidance are difficult to control and may significantly impair person's functioning and even physical health.

I'm very nervous about blowing them up by mouth. That's because I can't stand having a balloon pop anywhere near my face.
