Suppose that 25% of all wise people are nice and half of all nice people are wise. Suppose further that 25% of all people are neither wise nor nice. What percent of all people are both wise and nice?

Note to the answer below:

If 18.75 % are both wise and nice, then 18.75 % are nice but not wise („half of all nice people are wise“) and 56.25 % are wise but not nice („25% of all wise people are nice“). We know that „25% of all people are neither wise nor nice“. It follows, that there are 18.75+18.75+56.25+25 = 118.75 % people altogether. Isn’t it too much?

75% of 25% = 3/4 x 1/4 = 3/16 or 18.75 %
