Actually we have 47 states and three commonwealths (Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania). I believe that Hawaii is considered the last state or commonwealth to join even though it and Alaska were admitted on the same day. We have 50 stars and 50 political units.

if this is a real question, our educational system is in ruins. How many stars are on our flag.......sure as hell not 51!
