My first question is do you have woodworking skills and tools. You will need at least the basic tools. Tape measure, square, drill & bits, screwdriver, handsaw, glue and screws plus hardware. In the meantime I will search my woodworking sites for you. This is a fairly simple project and is a good beginer project you could actually build this from the picture you showed.

Forgive me this, but I didn't go to the links. I was born and raised on a farm, and a MUD room/hall was neccesary.

In those days they were crude structures, given that aesthetics weren't such an issue. Often just Pine Planks, or nailed together to form Boxes to put the boots/shoes in, until the next use, which was often within a 30 minute time period between chores/ lunch/ and the next chores session.

Obviously there are many options.

Intitially I'd want a a "scraper" outside the mud room, or at least some rough indoor/outdoor washable carpet, then perhaps the same indoors for left over residue. I might even use Milk Crates stacked, and ZIPPED together. for the compartments

It might be that CUBBY isn't as important as a shelf to line up the boots/ work shoes, to dry the mud, perhaps with a 1 x 1 strip of lumber to secure heels.

It might be that you attach a 1x whatever length piece of pine as a backer board, attached to the wall above, at the studs,,,with various hooks for coats/Slickers/ even long dowels for boots to hang on to aid in drying.

My thoughts may be OLD school, but our PLACE for that specific purpose was never meant to be strictly pleasing to look at, but was totally functional and effective.

Target sells modules for closets that might work for what you want. All you have to do is put them together and stack them. They come in many shapes and colors. They also have square modules that you can put slide out fabric boxes in, like a drawer if you want.
