Instead of blaming the government, why don't you get angry with all of the politicians that throw millions of dollars out the window while campaigning? Why don't you get angry with a moron like Michael Vick who bankrolled illegal dogfighting? Why don't you get angry with actors & actresses that do stupid stuff, then waste their money with fines, legal fees and court costs? There are so many wealthy people out there just throwing their money out the window...and you're angry with the government??? They cannot control the weather. Yes, there were other measures that should have been taken and could have been taken, but weren't. Instead of wasting your time blaming the government, why don't you start getting angry with all of the wasteful wealthy people in this country??

To: the broken planet....
I have a life, thank you. My question had nothing to do with "all of the wealthy" banding together and paying for the repairs. My question was aimed more at those that are angry with the government for something that really isn't their fault, and asking why aren't they more focused on being angry with things that are AVOIDABLE.

Broken Planet: Sorry. I don't agree with your point of view. However, that's the great thing about opinions...we are all entitled to have them and express them. You are more than entitled to your opinion, and you expressed it. Whether or not I agree with it doesn't make it wrong.

Why don't you get angry with the people who didn't evacuate when they were told to? Why don't you get mad at the people who continually build in places adversely affected by the weather?

I don't blame the government entirely. I would be the 1st to tell you "wait on the government for anything and you will probably die from waiting..." But the government is undoubtedly responsible for certain things like keeping a cities infrastructure up and going, rebuilding, etc. I think they mishandled the matter afterwards. In America, people can do what they want to do with their money and lives. That's a freedom you have...do what you want, become what you, etc. Even if its a criminal... After the storm, tons of people gave money hoping that was enough and the government supposedly was on top of it sending trailers (the trailers are killing the people now). Those trailers were for short-term use! I'm wondering how do you sue the you landlords... I was laid off shortly after Katrina and ran into jobs reserved for evacuees... Then we had to deal with evacuees that didn't want to work but wanted to stay in the hotels for free. I think N.O. had a set an atmosphere for poverty and other lifestyles which lead to its downfall. A lot of the people in Superdome had no means of evacuating and would have been dependent on the government. So why would it be any different after the storm?

I agree. My husband and I were just talking about this over our lunch today. We are pay to pay kind of people. We have enough for bills and food that's it. We were talking about if we were there to catch all of Britney's rehab money, Lindsay's fine money, we'd have more money than the lotto is up to right now. I do blame the government for a lot of doings in this country, but that's because we have a president in which we can easily put the blame on.

I thought of another thing.. It's more of a Conspiracy theory, The actors and actress are paid to give us show, so I think that they are paid to act like they are all drugged up, and on the bottles, and neglecting their children, because what do they have to lose nothing! So by getting paid to act like this, the popo go out and shoot these pictures of them make up wack job stories and get a few bucks on the side for themselves for selling the rag.

This makes a lot more sense....

Instead of being angry at the government, get angry at people that have money. After all, it's their fault for being rich and not spending the money the way the asker thinks they should. All the rich people in the world should've come together and paid for the New Orleans repairs themselves. That's why they got rich in the first place: to spend it all on hurricane damage.

Get a life, girl.

No, people shouldn't be angry with the government, unless they want to be mad at the Louisiana senators that voted in favor of a budget bill that cut funding for the levees (look it up if you don't believe me). People should really stop complaining and whining for the "government" to fix everything for them and pull themselves together and do it themselves like the people in southern Mississippi are.

EDIT TO ADD: Thank you, Beth. The point that I was trying to illustrate is similar to yours, but with a little practicality. The truth is that it's equally useless to be angry at celebrities for 'wasting their money.' Why should you, I, or anyone else care what celebrities do? We give 'celebrities' too much credit as it is.

I'll agree completely with you about the politicians wasting money on campaigning, because I've always believed that elections were more about money than votes anyways.

The point is simple, Beth: If people spent more time worrying about themselves instead of what 'famous' people were doing, than maybe we wouldn't have the media overwhelming us with Paris and Britney news everyday, and maybe the media wouldn't be as powerful as it is.

I think people should be much more concerned with how they're being governed than how much money Lindsay lohan is spending on her rehab. Wouldn't you agree?

I believe that the federal, state, and local governments all had some culpability for the inadequate, poorly planned responses to Hurricane Katrina. Private organizations like churches appeared to be doing more constructive good than the government bureaucracies.

I feel compassion for those who lost everything or almost everything from the storm and flooding, However, I can't help but be concerned that we, in approximately the last 75 years (dating back to the Great Depression) have allowed so many people to become so dependent on the government taking care of them.

Many of the hurricane victims , especially in New Orleans, appeared to possess absolutely no survival skills because of their life long dependence on government "from cradle to grave" For others the "law of the jungle" kicked in resulting in looting and preying on those weaker than them.

The government did provide assistance to those affected by the disaster. One can argue that it was inadequate or poorly distributed, .but some of that aid was squandered. Remember the $2500 voucher cards that some people were using for inappropriate purchases?

People shouldn't realistically expect any one entity to provide 100% relief if they are victims of a disaster like Katrina. My last thought on this is "God helps those who help themselves"

PPL blame the government because the Core of Engineer dragged their a$$e$ and didn't repair the levees. Back in 2004 when we moved to Slidell LA, they were talking about how Nagin was asking the Core to repair the levees.
BTW- How the hell do you expect ppl to evacuate if they have NO transportation. If your not from LA, you have no idea. N.O. is like New York in the way that they take public transportation. If a natural disaster hit NY, they'd be just as screwed as NO. Many have no transportation!
You rich, well off idiot need to grow up, get a heart and open your minds! Quit blaming the poor for their situation! Many poor in NO worked their a$$e$ off to keep a roof over their heads and keep their homes. Paid their insurance premiums too! But when it came down to the insurance idiot to pay up, they denied claims for stupid reasons!
GOD BLESS MY FELLOW KATRINA SURVIVORS, STAY STRONG!!
MUCH LOVE!!

Does EVERYONE blame the government for what happened with Hurricane Katrina? Pretty much. That and global warming, like the guy above me said.

Because it's part of the government's job in situations like this to step in when things get too big to handle locally. They are supposed to be able to pool resources from all over, and mobilize them where they are most desperataly needed. And to do so quickly and with good organization.

It's part of what we pay taxes for.

I don't know of anyone who expected Michael Vick to send money and manpower to respond to Katrina. He was just a football player. It's not his job.

Actually,

I blame Kathleen Blanco for being so stupid.

There is not much George Bush could have done. If he would have entered the state without permission from that retard there would have been a lot of power issues.

She's a complete moron to put it in nice terms.

I'm not blaming the government for the hurricane. They are responsible for horrible after care of the situation. Just alone having trucks loaded with food and NOT giving it to the people in need. COME ON. Taking people out of their houses and trying to take away peoples guns, its just not acceptable. We do not live in a HITLER type government but everyday it turns to that.

Homeland security = modern day Hitler youth except its no youth, its idiot adults.

Nobody can blame a natural disaster on someone, but you can blame FEMA and goverment agencies for handling the after care HORRIBLY.
