How do (external) DVD Recorders work & can they Rewrite DVD's too?

I saw a DVD recorder & would like to buy it. The problem is that I don't know how it works. This recorder looks just like a simple DVD player. Does it require a PC? Can it Rewite DVD's?

if it's standalone recorder like vcr then u don't need pc.if it's external burner , then u need one.

it depends what it is if it requires a computer. it will only rewrite rewritable dvd. like DVD-RW
