I'm a Freshman in college and taking a english 102 class, should i be taking 101 as a freshman??

Not necessarily. Some colleges have their ENG 101 and ENG 102 classes go over similar subjects with slight variations between the two. (When I was in college, my 102 class focused more on poetry, while the 101 class read more of the classics - but both still covered the basics.) So if you only have to take one ENG 100 level class, that may answer why you are in 102.
Or...did you take AP English in High School? Sometimes that will transfer over into college and you won't have to take an English class that is pretty much the same as your AP class.
If you still are unsure, I would double check with your academic advisor.

You take 101 first semester and 102 second semester. If you had AP English in High School, then you'd jump to 102.

Yes, it would be a smart idea, unless you were tested by the college and placed there. Many consider it one of the toughest college classes.
