Rap by classification is actually "spoken word" format with a beat. There is not usually a melody, which would declassify it as music.
Rock is derivative from blues and requires a melody. It is a music genre of its own.

It occurred to me that ever since CDs became the dominant format, the term rock has gradually been mixed into some kind of pop-rock, with stores creating sections of punk (which is really just anti-disco music), metal, industrial, etc., much the same was as sub genres exist in soul, r 'n' b, and so forth. Such subclasses of music are all right to use as adjectives for describing a musical style, but as there are becoming almost as many genres as bands, it's time to rethink the term "rock" music.
Rock music? If rock were a specific type of stone (no pun intended), that would be the diamond. Why the diamond? The diamond is not only the hardest substance known to humans, but it is also the substance from which the stylus of a turntable is made. As the long playing record began production in the mid-1950s by RCA*, Elvis was being signed and a new musical genre was being born. As 78 rpm records went the way of non-diamond needles in favour of the diamond needles, so too did the "'n'roll" start to be dropped from "rock 'n' roll". So we have the formation of rock coinciding with the signing of Elvis onto the LP format from RCA, first producers of a format requiring a diamond or rock needle. So too rock fizzled as a movement when CDs became the dominant format. Yet rock lives on, as do DJs and their turntables. So rock is really turntable music, even if it's on the CD format.
As for rap, I'm pleased to see that people are finally beginning to recognize it for what it is, poetry set to beat and rhythm sounds. Then there's the grey area between rap and rock. Could this be the beginning of a genre known as rap 'n' roll? Remember, you heard it here first.**

I completely agree, and I'm really glad that everybody who's answered so far isn't so crazy about rap either. I think it's terribly, misogynistic garbage and I'm sorry to insult any one's tastes but...yuck!!!
Rap definitely goes out of style fast to, maybe for some people the rebelliousness and violence is cool for a little while but I they really going to rocking back in forth to some psycho screaming profanities when they're 80? Rap doesn't last because there's no passion, and if the music of this era doesn't change soon who knows what we'll have next.

rock!!!!! Wo0t!! rap in my opinion is really easy. if you get someone to write ur songs for u. u dont have to play instruments or anything like you do with rock music. rock takes skill with instruments {guitar, bass, drums}. also i think the vocals with rock music are a lot harder than rap. in most rap songs, the vocals are on umm one note? i dunno. it doesnt take a lot of singing skills to rap. just need to be able to talk fast. lol. but with rock its hard... especially with the modern day rock. but thats just what i think. theres no right or wrong answer to "Who's better?" its just what people prefer in music.

Rock and Metal for sure.
If I'm gonna listen to rap, though, mix it with the rock, like Linkin Park and some of the others did.

Overall Rock by far, but we can't ignore that Rap and hip hop have captured the rawness and Resistance to the establishment that rock used to have. Rock has become acceptable by parents and the older generation. Young people need a music of their own that makes their parent "hold their ears" and say "turn that crap down" ! I miss the rebellion of Rock, that is now own by hip hop and rap..

Rock music by far is the one of the best genres of music ever.
Rock musicians take their time and soul to put their feelings on paper and to turn it into a good song. The lyrics are powerful, the songs have meaning.
No matter what era of rock, from the 80's classics all the way to the new mainstream "Fall Out Boy" era, rock will still dominate.
Someone, PLEASE explain to me how rap is so "interesting". How rap is so "cool"? What is so good about rap? By far, rap is one of the worst and disturbing genres of music I have ever heard of. All of those kids listening to it are getting a BAD message. They talk about getting arrested, convict, cars, hookers, drinking, money, etc. That's NOT something people should be listening to! It's such a horrible waste of time to rhyme words that are going to be said really fast over a bad synthetic beat.
Rock music is based on time and dedication to form. Rap is just plain, ridiculous, and gives a bad name to musicians everywhere. I think rap is just a big insult to society.
But to all of the rockers everywhere, we salute you.

I wrote the answer for another question first.
Rock, why do you always see Rap songs made from the background of Rock songs, you never see the opposite, because rock is better.
