Because secret ballots are the only way to have true votes. Open ballots, such as what the Democrats want to have for unionization voting, are subject to intimidation and other pressure tactics that can throw a vote one way.
Secret ballots give the voter maximum freedom of choice, without any fear of reprisal.
Makes one wonder why the Democrats are against secret ballots for unionization votes, doesn't it?

So you can have privacy, it is only your business. And so that you can vote the way you think is right, without being intimidated by those who want you to vote their way. The secret ballot is an important part of freedom.

Historically speaking, voting was supposed to be secret in order for you to be able to freely choose the candidate(s) you wanted to vote for.
You could wind up being punished before or after you voted by strong arms hired by the opposition candidate, or being singled out for unfair government attention if your candidate lost and the winning candidate found out how you voted, etc etc etc.
Nowadays, they just ascribe your vote to a timestamp at the registry, the electronic balloting machines and the exit polls. Not exactly a "secret" vote anymore, is it?

they are private because no one should feel pressured to vote for a candidate or face confrontation by other voters who have differing opinions. For the same reason it is impolite to ask someone who they voted for.

Because you are entitled to your right to privacy. You will vote for who you truly want in office if you don't feel threatened by what others may think of your preference.
