Why do dogs howl at high pitch noises?

I was playing with my dog a little big ago and when i squeaked her toy a bunch of times she started howling. She has never done it before. I thought it was so funny the noise she made. Why was she howling today but never any other time?

I can get Reuben to howl if I play the harmonica.
I guess the sound reminds them of a dog howling.

my dog always howled when the tornado siren went off. i thought it hurt his ears, but was told he thought another dog was singing and was joining in. i don't know if it's true or not.
