I've never had a drop-in bobbin, and I have owned Kenmore, Brother, Dressmaster, and Pfaff machines. They all have bobbins that you put into a metal case and then fit vertically into the hook race of the machine.

How do you get a 5?

No, not all sewing machines have drop in bobbins. Many have a bobbin case.

It's very easy to tell by looking at the machine which is which. I think mine came from J.C. Penney's, once upon a time.

Personally, I think drop in bobbins are easier to use.
