It's more than likely engine oil thats dripped onto the exhaust manifold from the last time it was run. Have it checked out by a mechanic, a service wouldn't go a miss due to the lenght of time the car as been off road...

Leaving a car to stand for that long isn't really that good for the car. It really depends on how new it is. New cars survive better for longer times. I would take the car out and drive it for a few miles, just to get some fresh air through it. Also make sure it has water, and enough oil.

when was the last time you had it MOT'd. i think it should go for a service check before you put it onto the road. about the smell, have you checked that pipe-thingy at the back of the car to see if there is anything stuck up there, it could be carbon monoxide. or, it could just be burning rubber from the tyres.

If you have left the car standing for a year the oil is probably as thick as tar. Give the car an oil and filter change before driving it too far.

It could be burning oil - check the exhaust fumes, and if they are blue, its burning oil.
However, if it has been stood for a while give it a good revving and it should be ok - it really depends what it was like before you stopped running it

try and run it for a while , might have something growing in it like moss.
start it every two weeks and move it about a bit to stop brakes ceasing up
