Depends on where you go. I have not been to the beaches in the Carolinas, but they are supposed to be pretty good. The beaches in Florida are good, great sand and surf.
As the other poster mention, the Jersey Shore is pretty good, although the water is not nearly as warm or as clear in Florida.
In Maine, the ocean is cold year round, even in the middle of August (because the ocean currents bring water down from the Arctic). The surf on the ocean is very rough, even on the beaches the water is pretty rough. There are plenty of sandy beaches, especially in the south (like York beach), but the water is still to cold to really enjoy swimming around in.

the only great place to surf on the east coast is down in Florida---otherwise the beaches don't get enough wave/tide to surf (except at night when its too dangerous). Generally, try Daytona Beach, Miami beach, etc...
As far as surf, I would venture to say that 70% of the beaches out there have better surfing than the east coast---California is one of those, but for the best surf, try Hawaii

I don't think people visit the east coast for the beauty of the beaches (except for the light houses off of North Carolina). I know the Georgia beaches aren't very pretty. The beaches you want to visit are in the Florida panhandle area. The sand is the whitest you've ever seen and there is decent wave action.

Florida still has great beaches at great expense. They have to keep hauling in more sand. So the grains of sand is not infinite. West of Florida but east of Texas is Padre Island, the longest beach in the world. There are bridges from the mainland. To make you feel at home are Portuguese man-o-of wars swimming in shallow water. Still want to surf? There is very good fishing from Texas to Maine.

Further south like the Carolinas down to Florida! Up north maybe Virginia! But mostly there's no rocky, mountainous coastline on the eatern U.S. coast and it still be really warm/hot weather for really long periods! Nurdee, I know where Portugal is, so don't mix all of us up with Miss Teen South Carolina!

Well the surf @ NC beaches isn't anything great unless a hurricane is on the way. All in all though...the east coast is great..not to far from the beach or the mountains. You get the best of both worlds.

The water is relatively warm and sunrise is over the ocean. Not much surf but plenty of good metal detecting for artifacts.
