I had always thought the ending meant that Harold rolled his car off the cliff, but was O.K., and went on to savor each moment of life. My son recently watched the movie and thought it meant that Harold committed suicide. Anybody seen this old classic & have any opinions?

He faked his last suicide.. He learned that he should not waste so much time thinking about death.. because it became more real when it happened to someone close to him.. He went on to leave a happy enough life..(of course that would be assumed.. at the very least the whistling says he's going to try to lead a happy life.. )

I think the ending is so vague so you can pick the ending you like best. (Kind of like the book "the lady and the tiger")

P.S.
Harold and Maude is one fuct up movie, imho.
