Because universally everyone is working to the same standard.
It is also based on the decimal numbering system, rather than the Imperial system.

The standardize system provides a common set of weights and measures that everyone can use so it facilitates the communication of technical information. Since the SI unit tend to be metric, distances, mass, speeds, etc can be related by scales of powers often. For instance 1 gram = 0.001 kg. Compare that to 1 ounce = 0.0625 lbs. Not an easy scaling.
