If Adam and Eve were the only two people on earth, and one son killed the other one, who did the remaining son marry and how did they populate the earth? I called my husband, who said the guy married a mermaid (men are such a big help sometimes). How would you explain this, all the while trying to avoid knocking religion and not mentioning inbreeding (he is in parochial school....)....

Adam didn't just have two son's, he had quite a few children. Adams sons and daugthers married each other. It seems strange to us now, but back in the day thats how they did it.

Genesis 5: 3 - 5

3)And Adam lived 130 years and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image and called his name Seth.

4)and the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were 800 years and he begat sons and daughters.

5)and all the day that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

I cannot "improve this answer, because this answer is correct. I merely want to echo it, and add a few more thoughts, because there are so many here that seem to want to contradict this fine answer. It is similar to another question, "where did Cain get his wife?" The Bible is clear. The Bible states in very plain and simple language at Genesis 5:4 that "...he (Adam) became father to sons and daughters." Notice the plural "sons" and "daughters." Since Adam lived for 930 years, he reasonably could have fathered many, many children. His sons, including Cain, would have married their sisters, or nieces. This would sound repulsive to us today, but consider the circumstances back then. It would have been proper at that time, since the Earth's population was relatively sparce, and the human race was to be proliferated acording to God's purpose. It was only later that God made the restriction not to marry one's own sister or brother.

I agree that the sons and daughters married each other and had kids together and the cycle went on. p.s it is so digusting to us now i know and read the bible new king james version you will not regret it

Caine and Abel were the only 2 mentioned in The Bible but there were other children and inbreeding was neither sinful nor dangerous as there were no genetic diseases to pass along. If he's in parochial school have him ask his teacher and tell you the answer.
