There are different types of democracy, for example in Britain we have a "first-past-the-post" system. The current government only managed to obtain 35.5% of the overall vote. Now, they are the only people who decide what happens in the country, the other 65% have no say what so ever. For example, if the government wants to go to war they will go to war whether the opposition parties like it or not. This is called a "democratic deficit". It is exists in the United Kingdom, United States of America and EU.

See Federalist 10.
"From this view of the subject it may be concluded that a pure democracy, by which I mean a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble and administer the government in person, can admit of no cure for the mischiefs of faction. A common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole; a communication and concert result from the form of government itself; and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual. Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."
Even in a system intended to guard against the evils of faction, prohibition came to light when progressive zealots merged with religious zealots.
In a democracy, a majority can unjustly overrule the rights of others. Perhaps better than it being done by a king or socialist dictator, but nonetheless a problem.

One of my favorite movie lines is from "The Patriot" when Mel Gibson remarks about trading one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away. There is little difference. Either form of government can and will violate your individual rights.
But the advantage of a dictatorship over a democracy is that there is only one target for freedom fighters. If you don't like the dictator, shoot him, and install a new one. It's a system that seems to work pretty well in South America. Contrast that with libertarians and rights activists in the USA, who fight a never-ending uphill battle trying to persuade a majority of voters of the value of freedom. (Note that freedom is not the same as democracy, like so many people seem to believe.)
So the disadvantage of democracy is that the people voting to destroy your rights are your family, and your neighbors, and many people that you love. That makes it awfully difficult to take action against them.

Potential for 49% of the population to be ignored 100% of the time.
Just look at the creation of democracies in Africa. The tribes had trouble understanding why we would force a gov't system on them that assured dissent instead of their former council gov'ts which thrived on people actually agreeing, or at the very least chosing to do what was wanted by the majority instead of having it thrust upon them.

It often gets bogged down in debate slowing down process where an autogratic goverment could just make a decesion and thats that. Just look at any bill in Congress. Say socialized medicine, where Castro can just say this is what we are going to do, in the US this has been debated for 20 years or longer.
As mentioned, large portions of the population can be ignored.
It has to be guarded. Dissent is allowed to happen, and without strong guards, coups are easy... ex- a lot of Central American countries.

i don't think it's really the democracy that is the con i think it's our democratic system that doesn't work. see if we were just democratic and not a republic too then we would have no senators and house representatives. it would be us and our president and we would vote on every bill.
the problem with our government is that the only people that run for office are the greedy politicians that are out for their own agenda anyway but will tell us what we want to hear to get elected. if we weren't dealing with a bunch of liers then the theory of our government would be functional.
