I agree to an extent. In my experience I have noticed that people tend to cite scripture that helps them with their argument, and it's often only one verse which can easily be taken out of context. I don't believe the bible is a book of laws that we are to follow to a tee. After all is was written almost 2000 years ago. Times have changed. And even in the time frame the bible covers hundreds of years went by. The bible is filled with writings of the lives of people who did good and who didn't. It's more like a guide than a book of rules. The church was the first to "damn" me when I got pregnant out of wedlock. I thought my church was a safe place to go when I was need. Guess I was wrong. And though the bible says things about that it also says that God and Jesus love all people, remember Mary Magdaline?!

I agree wholeheartedly.

That's the trouble with religion -vs- just simply having faith in something greater than oneself.

Religions are at their root organized systems of control, especially when used by folks that are looking to control someone (oh, let's see...the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the Catholic Church, extremist Muslim's and their warping of the Q'aran...etc etc).

I think that Jesus would be absolutely appaled at what people have done to pervert his message.

This is especially noticeable when someone actually speaks the original languages that the Bible was written in. My closest friend speaks Hebrew as well as Greek and has given me scripture written in the original tongues. If you were to compare those words to an English language Bible they're totally different. Those differences are what's used to exploit, demean, and bully others. Alongside with that, do you have any idea how much editing, and deleting of scripture the Roman Catholic Mafia...oh sorry, Church has done? Anything that was "unfavorable" to their goals was changed, either by total deletion, or re-writing. This is all common knowledge, if you just know how to look.

Now, are there Christians out in the world that do have Jesus-like attributes? Yes, I know of several. On the other hand, I know plenty more hypocrites who have absolutely no such attributes whatsoever that still go to Church in their Sunday best.

i think it is the person...but when you are saying the Bible, do you mean, the Gospel, the NT, the OT, or the Bible as a whole?

also if you think you have been bullied you will react like you have been and be turned off to Christianity, than if you were just like wow that person wasn't nice.

Yeah, probably happens a lot, but the Bible lays out rules of behavior. When others break those rules, we quote scripture to show them the error of their ways. There is no reason for them to feel bullied. They can take it or leave it.

Bullies will use whatever medium they have at their disposal to intimidate others. People will bully with the Bible, with the Koran, with a referree's whistle, with homework, with crappy customer service, etc.

Whatever a bully thinks is most convenient and most effective is what they will use.

To control is more like it. This was very evident during slavery in the Americas. Look at the whole concept of turning the other cheek; Matthew 5 Vs 39 :

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

The scripture was used to keep the slaves in check.

I think so too. Not all but enough, some peoples beliefs are very much taken out of context and abused. Those people have a false sense of their religious beliefs. They really feel they are doing the right thing sometimes but dont know they have gone too far, spreading the word and trying to force it on you are entirely different.

Totally agree.

The bible's a really good book to learn from and to teach from. Not to control people with.
