Hi.fellow Boatie or anyone/
I know that maritime law forbids flying the skull & crossbones making it a pirate vessel in international waters, but at what penalty now we are out of old Elizabethan times.
The flags are available at chandlers for use as a bit of fun, and I stick one up when mooring on the inland waterways, along with the fake miniature cannon on the roof.
Surely the authourities will see the funny side, and not lock me in the brig I hope.
I also sometimes fly the red ensign, to show that I am freindly, which I am, but so did Sir Walter when acting as a licensed pirate for the crown.
I have a purple one with a potatoe emblem in the corner, for no particular reason.
What do you reckon ?

We see them on narrow boats past our house Bob.

Like the idea of a cannon.

Actually, i like the idea of a wooden galleon paint scheme with 50 fake portholes down the side..go on, i dare you.

people should lighten up with narrowboats - we could do with some variety. Only ever seen 2 "fun" schemes - one was Winnie the Pooh, thats still knoching about somewhere, the other was a Labourghini Coutach on the side of the boat - bit over the top but it was funny...A Lambo riding on the water at 4 MPH. repainted after 2 years i think, but why not laugh at it, not at the owner ?

Having said that, ours is dark blue with cream lines. ( boring eh ? )

I woudn't worry. BW would not care. If they do, tell them you'll write to CanalBoat and Inland Waterways magazines pointing our thier ridiculous priorities.

You could easily out cruise them anyway - they have to have a teabreak every 2 hours so you'd get away.

I think that flying the Red Ensign without authority or permission is more likely to get you into trouble than the Jolly Roger, but what the punnishment would be nowadays I'm not sure.

By the way, I guess the purple flag with the potato emblem would have to be 'The Jolly Roaster' !!!

if you are on board then you are supposed to disply the ensign at all times not just when you feel like it. also if you visit another country you are supposed to fly a small flag of the country your visiting somewhere in the rigging. As for the skull and cross bones i believe as long as its not full size i think your ok, the only full size flag you should fly is the ensign read your nautical almanac if you have one. if you aint you should have..

There are more pirates around now, than ever before. Many times the local gov. is in on it. Ships won't go to some destinatins because, of this, others go with armed escort. So there is a fair chance of you getting blown out of the water.

With Pirates of the Caribean being so popular can't see a problem. Most places that sell them advertise them as "fun" flags.
