From Madison, out to the House on the Rock, (top quirky attraction) up to the Dells (well, that too, I gather), across to Green Bay (Railroad Museum) and on to Door County (scenery and lighthouses), back to Madison...
And that's probably going to be mileage enough in 12 days
I've got my main activities sketched in, but what might I not have spotted in the guidebooks that I should include in my trip?
(that's the normal guidebooks and the Roadside America type)

hi....greenbay also has Lambeau Field if you are into american football, rafting down the wolf river is fun and a party experience (nothing like floating down a river with a cooler full of beer...lol) you might want to check ahead of time before heading to house on the rock, we have had some major flooding in that corner of the state over the past couple of weeks. the dells are fun, but rather touristy...if you go to a water park, I would recommend Noah's Ark and you should check out the duck rides (that is something you should experience..lol) you picked a great time to come here...all the kids will be back in school on the 4th, though you are a bit too early for the fall color change on the trees which is very pretty during peak season.
in door county ask where the christmas chalet is...cool store all christmas related stuff. and try and hit the orchards for door county cherries...cherry jam is to die for...lol if you are heading south on Hwy 43 at all stop in manitowoc on lake michigan they have a maritime museum that is pretty interesting as well as tours of a submarine. and don't forget to try wisconsin cheese! there are many cheese factories and stores along the way ( I recommend colby cheese and if you like it spicy go for pepper cheese as well as cheese curds). enjoy your trip the weather is suppose to be nice, warm during the day but cooler at night
have fun!
