I live in Wise County Texas (a cheap county) and also pay Denton County School tax... you can homestead your property which knocks off $10-15K before they tax you... Denton County School was 1.665 last year and Wise County was 0.416

Compared to other states, property tax rates are often quite high. But property taxes vary by county and city. Where in Texas?

Property taxes in Bexar County (San Antonio) comes out to about $3 per thousand of assessed value.
This may seem high to some people in the country, but it's because Texas has no state income tax, so it all comes out about even.

Property Taxes in the part of Texas I live in are 2.8% of the Tax Assessed "market value" of your property.
I just bought a home for 165000 and got the Tax value lowered to 165000 by shareing my HUD sheet with the Tax Appraisal DIstrict. My Taxes will be about $4620 for the year 2007. This is the rate that was used last year when you add the school tax, city tax, county tax, jr college tax, and hospital tax together.
I can apply for a homestead exemption and that will lower my homesteads property tax in my particulur area by about $400 a year. There are also exemptions for "over 65", disabled, and disabled veterens.
