I have two tadpoles that are about 4 inches long and are starting to get their legs... I have heard that there is a period when they don't eat as they are loosing their tail and possibly a bit after it is gone? What's the truth on this exactly and how soon after they are frogs should I start getting them live insects to eat?

You can introduce food as the tail disappears. You'll know they are reasonably close to ready when they eat what is left of the tail. Anyway, keep the enclosure clean and any food introduced too soon won't hurt.
