Even though I throw mine in the washer with bleach and wash them throughly several times I hear they sustain lots of germs and bacteria. Is that true? Plus they get bulky in the laundry. This past weekend I threw away ALL the old pillows in the house and bought new ones. Yay!

You should replace your pillow every 1-2 years. More importantly, all pillows should have pillow protectors on them to keep perspiration and drool (unpleasant but it happens!) out and dust mites in. It also keeps them looking fresh and white and not stained and yellow.

Without a pillow protector, after a while a significant portion of the pillow weight will be dead skin cells and dust mites! They can also harbor mold and fungus, all of which can really affect people with allergies or asthma. Washing them is great but can be a pain and does affect how they feel. Putting them out in the sun regularly without washing them also helps.
