To answer your question: yes. I think part of the problem is that teaching geography has been put on the back burner.
I teach incarcerated adult males who dropped out of high school and are working toward an ABE certificate . I find that many are very interested in looking at maps of the United States and the world as well as at the globe in my classroom. Their initial knowledge of georgraphy is sketchy ,but many seemed motivated to learn more.

I can even find Texas, Florida and some of the other big states.
(I usually have trouble with Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas though.)
