57 because 57 * 4 = 228 and 57 * 5 = 285

Hi,
1) Using a TI-83 Plus or TI-84 calculator, press MATH, move the cursor to NUM, and press 9 to paste gcd( to the home screen.
2) Enter the numbers so that you have gcd(228, 285 . You can either close the parentheses or not as you prefer.
3) Press ENTER. The answer of 57 will be displayed.

That's a good way to check, but most teacher want you to do it by hand.
1) Factor 228 into it's prime factors. You get 2*2*57.
2) Divide 57 into 285 to check and see if it's a factor of 285. You get 5.
So, 57 is the answer.

using Euclid's method,
285/228 = 1 r. 57
228/57 = 4 r. 0
last remainder before 0 is the GCF.
so 285 = 5(57)
and 228 = 4(57)

First, note that 228 and 285 are both divisible
by 3 because the sums of their digits are equal to
12 and 15, respectively.
Dividing each of these by 3, we now have to
find the GCD of 76 and 95.
But 76 = 19*4 and 95 = 19*5
so the GCD of these 2 numbers is 19.
So the answer is 3*19 = 57.
