So Leona Helmsley left 12 million dollars to her dog!!! Now I totally understand making sure the pooch is taken care of but she already gave the man that is going to take care of the dog millions.

So, just opinions, not really laws - what is your opinion of such insane extravagance.

YES YES I know it is her money and her right....but come on 12 million dollars?

Don't you think that makes her seem insane and therfore her will could be contested?

For me that was something stupid, is OK to leave something for the dog, but, Why she didn't give the rest for poor children that may use it in a better way? Why not to give to charity? Why not to give it to help to find a cure for M.D., cancer, AIDS or any other deceases that are affecting the life of thousands? That's the reason because this world isn't getting any better, people like that makes humanity to go backward instead forward. She had the chance to do something good, but she blew it.

It most likely will be challenged but I doubt it will succeed. She was worth over $4 Billion so to her $12 million is a drop in the bucket. She also specifically excluded members of her family. By carefully and willfully designing her trust in such a way it will be hard to argue she was insane. Most likely she used really good attorneys to draft this trust and if so they would have written this pretty ironclad and it is very likely they will be the ones defending the document in court and will testify to her competence. What seems like crazy to you is just no big deal to the uber rich!

aaahhh.... u saw that on yahoo too huh?

i think in ones opinion she could be labeled as insane... as strange as it may be... people tend to do foolish things with their fortunes -diamond encrusted bras, clothes, even cars in some cases-.....Its unfortunate that people who are trying to make ends meet struggle to stretch a dollar when this woman left millions to a damn dog. Personally if I had a million dollars I wouldn't be sitting behind this desk thats for sure.

The truth of the matter is You cant take it with you when you go.... so why not spend what you can today...

It's not insane -- in fact, it's not even uncommon.

Such a will creates a special type of trust for the benefit of the animal (or other non-human recipient) -- and after the animal dies, the body of the trust reverts -- either to the state (escheat) or to other heirs -- depending on the laws of the particular country and state/province.

How about bring the question a little closer to home If you had a Spouse that had already died and had NO HEIR but had a Pet (here in SAN FRANCISCO we call them pet guardians not owners) wouldn't you want to make sure it was taken care of after you pass? She had only one son and he died young. the closest reletive is her brother who is also named in the will.
