Basically, you want to isolate x by itself on one side of the equals sign. To get x by itself you would divide the left side by 4 (four exes divided by four leaves one ex). What you do on one side of the equation must be done on the other, so you have to divide the -18 by 4, giving you -4 1/2.

4x=-18
__ __
4 4

you divide the number beside the X to get rid of it..then just do the other equation of -18 divided by 4 and that will give you the answer to X.

divide the entire equation by 4. the 4's cancel out on the first side and you are left with x=(-18/4), or, x=4.5

you need to find what 1x equals, so you divide 4x by 4...
whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other so you do -18/4 which equals -4.5

Divide both sides by 4 to isolate the "x," variable. Then divide -18 by 4, which will yield:
X = - 4.5

If I said -4.5 would that be overkill? I don't wanna beat the subject to death.
