I have a usb storage device which I have plugged into my computer. The light on the device comes on and I get the "Safely Remove Hardware" option on my desktop, however when I go to My Computer it does not appear - is there a reason why this would happen? Thanks

I would try clicking on safely remove, taking it out, turning off your computer, then put it in again, restart computer.

After that is done, check again for the new drive. If it is still not there, go to your device manager and see if it shows up on your list of devices. Then try to add/remove hardware from your control panel. If it still does not find it, you need to return it to the store and try another one.

Maybe the 'drive letter' the USB Device is after is already allocated to another drive in your system (Card reader, perhaps).
Head to: Control Panel>Administrative Tools> Computer Management>Under the 'storage' heading in your left-hand taskpane, click on 'Disk Management'.
Do you see the USB Device listed in here? If so, do a right-click over the device & select 'Change Drive Letter & Paths', then click 'Change'.
Then just change the drive letter to another letter that is not already taken. (Try Q).
Head to My Computer for a list of all taken letters if you're unsure.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Try disabling the power management on the USB root hub devices or uninstalling the USB controller device in the Device Manager.

I have had this problem many times. The reason may be that you are using a newer USB2.0memory stick on the older USB1.1 socket on your computer. Upgrade your USB hub to the newer version and you will be OK. This is actually the only way from my experience. PC World don't seem to know this!

go to start > control panel > add or remove hardware > then set windows to search for new hardware. If it still doesnt appear then try looking on the website of the company that made the device to see if you can get any pointers there

its proberly there it just that you cant see it, try clicking on view and selecting list, then double click all the drive letters untill you find the mass strorage device make a note of the drive letter, once found trying renaming it to a name you would reconise.

Hope that helps as there should be no reason why you cant see it.
