Why is it that in a ‘free’ country we are forced to wear a seatbelt?

I am allowed to refuse healthcare but I can’t legally refuse to wear a seatbelt.

Are the seatbelt laws, which the police strongly enforce with $200 fines, a way to make money? How is it that in our country the government can make laws that have hefty fines and there is no victim to the supposed crime? Isn’t that a form of extortion?

Yes, I agree. I consider a car someones private property. It only makes sense to buckle up. I do, however think a person should be fined if that person's children aren't in a seat belt. Why make children suffer because of the parents laziness ?

The seat belt laws are wonderful. The fact of the matter is that by wearing a seat belt you protect more than just your own body. By reducing the amount of accident related fatalities seat belt laws reduce auto insurance rates. Besdies that, if someone causes an accident that killed the other driver, who would otherwise have been fine had they worn their seat belt, the at-fault driver becomes guilty of manslaughter. Worse, they have to live with that guilt their whole life, even though it wasn't really their fault. People who complain about seat belt laws are just selfish pricks who don't care to consider wider implications of their actions. There is NO reason to not wear a seat belt. And if you place so little value on your life, just go jump off a cliff right now.

P.S. If you have any illusion about your rights to your own body I'll break some harsh news to you; the state owns your body. Deal with it.

I guess they have proved that seat belts save folks from being launched from a car when it is in a collision. So they save lives.
While I find them to be an inconvenience, I'm guessing that the law is protecting us from ourselves more or less.

It seems a little dictatorial of the government to insist that we wear them but look at how many freedoms they have taken away under the guise of the "Patriot Act".

It isn't the $200 that bothers me.....its the points we lose if we get caught.

Hang in there, my friend

Seat belt laws are a gift from insurance companies. They did all the lobby work after they did the math and figured out that imposing the law would save them money. It's all about the Benjamins.

You're confounding "free" with "lawless." You're required to wear a seatbelt because the strength and health of a society starts with the strength and health of its citizens. If you were hurt or killed in an accident, you wouldn't be the only one to suffer.

Yes they are good. I already pay enough auto insurance. I don't need to pay more because some moron wants the freedom to fly through his windshield.

Now, if you weren't covered by insurance if you got into an accident while not wearing your seat belt then I would be all for having your "freedom" to choose to wear it or not.

have fun flying thru windows and out of vehicles if in a serious accident. have fun (after you refuse health care) getting treated for injuries because you weren't secured in your vehicle.
i wear mine because i want to be safe. not because i'm afraid of not and getting caught.
i think only fools don't wear them and i pity them if they are in an accident and reap the justice that happens when you don't have it on
