Quick and easy,
there is a button on the motor head press it, a lite will flash then go press the remote for a second or two go back and check the flashing lite if it is still flashing press the button again. when you press the remote the lite should stop flashing and go off or it's original state.
The slide switches if you have them are on older than 5 years old systems, and specific remotes have to be used withe them..

There are multitudes of manufacturers of garage door openers. I don't know which you have, but when it was installed you were given a book which shows how to set and change codes. Find it and read it. If you don't have the book, look on the until for the manufacturer and the model number, and do a web search for them to get a contact number to get a new book.

most that I have seen have a row of sliding switches numbered 1-4, the switches are either up or down. the remotes have the same set up. all switches should be in the same position for instance 1-up, 2-up, 3-down and 4-up, as long as the remotes and the receiver all match, it works.

it varies by vendor ... most have a "reset" type button in the motor mechanism that you need to reset then key in new number .. ask question again with make / model or better yet search Internet with same quesiton using make / model
