Whenever I drink it, it makes my stomach hurts really bad a few minutes after drinking it... I haven't had it in a few years but I tried some today to see if I still had that reaction and I did.

Obviously, I shouldn't drink it, but what could be causing this reaction?

Here is a Coke article I came across yesterday. I hope it is alright to share here:
Water or Coke?
Water…
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

9. If you have chronic headaches or migraines, suck down a 20 oz bottle of water at the onset!!! It helps to lessen the pain (if you follow that with Gatorade or Pedialite it will help even more!!)

And now for the properties of Coke:

1. In ma ny states (in the USA ) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke
in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from porcelain and china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the co rrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is...

Would you lik e a Coke or a glass of water?

the pH is very low on all these kind of drinks....

the pH is something that is represented by a number between 0 and 14 for water solution, and it "represent" the concentration of protons (this is the "acid unit, it is Hydrogen ion, that is present in water as hydronium "H3O+"). O corespond to 1M 9M is a unit of concentration) concentration, 14 to 0.000000000000001 M . for example the pH of your blood is 7.2, around 7 is called neutrality.
the pH of cola is usually around 2 or 3. this is high acidity.
Acidity is able to "attack" molecules like proteins, the reaction that happens is called acid hydrolysis. it just beack the molecule in 2 smaller unit. The result is that a steack wil be "disolved" in the coke for example.

the stomach is a kind of pouch like every body know, and this pouch have a role in the digestion of the food you eat. Its pH is also low (around 2 to 3). this is a necessity for the digestive enzymes to work. But in the same time acidity is attacking the wall of the stomach, but the stomach is also synthesizing a protective substance that coat the inside surface of it.
the problem is when you eat or drink something, your brain is analyzing the situation and tell you stomach to produce acid and enzymes to digest what you eat, so because of the high acidity of the cola, there is an overdose of acid in you stomach, and if the protective mucus is too thin, the stomach wall would be impaired....

As a conclusion ... stop drinking that sh..t
you don't need to take any sh..t or medicine, just relax, re-equilibrate you food (decrease fat), don't eat less that 2 ours before going to bed, don't drink during the meal but in between, start a low intensity physical activity (walk), decrease alcohol consumption, stop smoking decrease caffea, ... that will help the stomach pain in few weeks (let time to you body ... it is better).
If you still have pain or burn, then you can see you Doc... or you can go to the doc directly and ask for hygieno-dietitic advise... it is difficult to give the good advice if you d'ont see the person..

just a comment on a post ... Ascorbic acid is what we call also vitamin C ...

Your stomach is sensitive to the acid contained in coke, plus the carbonation is often very harsh on some people's systems. Try watering down your coke by making a rootbeer/coke and icecream float, or by adding sodas such as sprite to lemonade, juices, etc. Or, just cut out coke and sodas from your diet. There are plenty of other things to drink

I drink Cocaine-Cola about once a year. This time, with vodka, and now am having severe burning pain in my stomach for 2 days. Cocaine-Cola is only good to clean rust off metal parts of your car or bike. Also it is good to turn food scraps to compost, FAST. Pour Cocaine-cola on a dead cat and see it disappear in about a week.

cola products are very acidic. We preformed several experiments in my chemistry class and found very surprising results. Coke can "eat" a steak in 24 hours, clean toilet bowls, be used to clean up blood and clean battery acid build up off of car batteries. Your stomach is probably just too sensitive for certain types of pop.

The acid in the cola is overreacting with the acid in your stomach. I couldn't drink any kind of pop (all of it is acidic and eats at your enamel) when I was taking certain medications because of that. My Mom can't drink any because of it.

sometimes your stomach acid is already too strong and strong drinks like coke and coffee irritate it if your stomach is empty. this is especially true for people with blood type "O", seeing as their stomach acid is stronger than other types.
