The issue of damages has several components -- actual damages (out-of-pocket costs) -- consequential damages (estimated costs of side-effects) -- and punitive damages (fines as punishment).

People rarely complain about actual damages, and not often about consequential damages -- both are based on actual formulas and equations that calculate specifically how much financial harm has been done.

Most tort reform focuses on punitive damages, which are independent of the harm done and designed to punish the company for doing something bad. It's in that area that many people have many different opinions.

First please don't say the death penalty issue is a conservative one. I am conservative but anti-death penalty.

Lawsuits for some things are ridiculous but the ones that are for gross negligence are awarded by juries and can be appealed, just like death penalty rulings.

Both parties are hypocritical on some issues, that's politics
