The wall was spackled in some areas after wallpaper was removed . Also it is a bedroom wall and it is not attached to another wall or building. Do I need to use an oil-based primer to prevent the new paint form cracking?

The new paint should not crack. The reason for primers/sealers is to insure an even color when repainting. If you do not prime, you could find splotches when the new paint dries.

Are you painting or wall papering the wall???In either case, take some white viniger and warm water and wash down the wall to make sure all the glue is off...if the wall is in tough shape respackle and sand then ,I would use a oil based primer just because if you don't have all the glue off the wall ,because latex paint has water in it it will make any paper and paste residue to peel off and you will have to start all over...the oil base primer will seal all the remains on the wall, but you should do your darndest to remove all residue...If the wall is in tough shape that may be the reason it was covered in the first place

You don't need oil based primer - latex is fine. I never had paint crack - maybe you are putting it on too thick if that does happen. But the primer will give you a better top coat if you have fresh spackle on the wall.

Most important - make sure all the glue is off the wall!

There is a product called Kilz that is a very good primer and covers just about anything. You would do well to put on a coat of primer because otherwise you will end up with cracked paint. Why go to all the trouble of painting if you don't do all the prep work to ensure a good quality end result?
