of course, everyone does. but does being gay raise any specific issues about aging? people around here are so centred on youth that its bizarre.
does lacking children generally mean that a community grows up together or do u become slowly isolated with time.

No, not really. I think I did when I was 17, but seeing how much my life and my satisfaction with my life has improved since then, I'm now looking forward to it.

I don't think I'm going to have to worry about isolation for a while, since I'll probably die before James (I'm older). Plus I have a step daughter who adores me. :)

No I do not fear getting old. I am having too much fun enjoying life. I am 48 and am wondering if this mid-life crisis thing I have heard so much about is ever going to come.

Don't get caught up in the numbers people. Age just says how long you have been on the planet in this life. It is not a reference to the life you can live or enjoy.

I am gay and partnered. No real fears of being alone because my happiness is not dependent on someone being there for me. If this guy spends the rest of my life with me, great! If not, that is great too.

Fear of progressive decay and eventual death is a natural reaction to getting older, probably with a little bit more emphasis in the hearts of gay men.

I'd say the biggest problem facing gay seniors today is the sense of isolation -- A number of today's seniors did not have the benefit of spending their adult lives as out gay men or lesbians -- Many only came out later in life and so do not feel connected with the gay community.

But even elderly gays who have few family members around to support them when old can lead lives that are healthy if they have a social network of friends, neighbors, and daily contacts.

Speaking for myself , the older i'm getting the better my life is . I'll be 50 in 4 yrs time and i'm really looking forward to it.
I have to agree with you however , in that society as a whole , not just gays , has an unhealthy fixation on youth and trying to look/stay young .
I shave my head , will request 2 be shot if seen wearing a tracksuit !! and have binned the blue jeans for trousers i beleive in style over fashion , or is that something European .? I'm a wrinkly old git , and loving it !!!

The older you get the less you fear it. Then one day you wake up and your 75 and you say to yourself, "Oh my God, I'm an old person!" And it does not bother you one bit. You just go on tapping your foot in the men's room.

I am 79 and I love it. I can play the clown and no one gets upset. They just chalk it up to senility not knowing it is premeditated.

Don't worry about it kids just enjoy where you are and take as it comes. Every age has its special moments.

I fear my body failing me as I age. It's already quite frail in some respects due to congenital defects, but quite strong in other ways to compensate. I just had my first-ever surgery and I'm recovering nicely...but if I have too much more of this to look forward to I'd actually prefer the alternative.

Not particularly. I have had a generally good life all the way though, so I don't want to be young, any more than I want to be old. You can take something from each stage of life.

But we definitely have a youth-centered culture.

TOO LATE!

I'm already old!

So I look forward to continuing to get older. The alternative is not at all attractive.

And every Friday, I get together with a group of aging gay men to have a potluck, watch a movie, and play cards. Isolation is unnecessary.
