You're not wasting the gas, you are using it to cool your car off.
Well worth the slight cost of the gas on those days when it is cooking out side..

The air conditioner requires power. The only source of power in a car that runs on gas these days is from gas. Even the battery is charged from the engine which is powered by gas.

The air conditioner does require a bit of energy to get its job done. However, in some places, an air conditioner is almost a necessity. If the temperature is comfortable in the car then go without the air conditioner if you can. Beware, constantly turning the AC on and off will still consume a lot of energy.

How much more gas mileage can you get without AC? Probably not too much. I would rather keep the AC on myself.

Also remember, everything else in your car that draws electricity is a drain on the gas. Radio, cell phone charger, GPS, really cool James Bond gadgets, DVD player. All of this stuff needs electricity which ultimately will come from the gas.

Define waste? Technically any time your car is running and not moving, you are wasting gas. Are you going to start shutting it off at every red light? The amount of fuel used to power the A/C is not enough to worry about, so set your climate control to where you are comfortable and don't worry about it, or go buy a hybrid if you are.

According to the research, the a/c system compressor recharging without any lubricant oil will cause
premature wear and tear, leading to mechanical failure of the compressor and increase fuel
consumption. PAG Oil Charge, it helps not only enhance the a/c system flow, but also
prolongs the a/c system’s lifespan. Check your car air-con compressor oil level.

the cars today are designed to have less wind resistance with the windows rolled up, if you are trying to choose between running the a/c or rolling the windows down then you should get better gas mileage with the windows up and the a/c on.

mythbusters did this myth and found it was more fuel efficient to drive with the a/c on full blast rather that all the windows open. So yes, you waste gas but not as much as having your windows open.
