What kind of jobs are available to someone with a history degree? I like history but am worried about getting a job that will make it worth the effort and support my family.

I have a BA in Military History / Strategic Analysis from the University of Maryland.

I paid my dues, worked hard, and got a job as an IT consultant.

I was also concerned. But, then I realized that my employer was always more interested in my raw intelligence (duh) and my discipline (I have a real accredited degree). So, I had my bases covered...

There are several options available to you.
1. Major in history, but work outside your field
2. Get a second marketable degree(business)
3. Become a teacher. This offers the greatest chance of studying history, and earning a paycheck.
4. Actually work in the history field where employment is hard to come by.
5. Minor in history, and study something else that interest you.
6. Major in history, and keep at until your a professor

With any BA degree, you can work in entry level state and local agencies (you won't make that much money). You can also get a teaching certificate and teach history. You can work at a museum. You can also get your law degree. Or get your PhD in History and become a professor.

But I suggest that if you are looking for higher salary, you should major in something more practical and perhaps, minor in history (if you love it that much). Computer science is always in high demand. All my friends who have degrees in computer are doing very well. If you like numbers, go for accounting or math/finance/statistic...with that you can get into the business world (they love people who have math degrees). If you like helping people, get a science degree and then go to grad school for physical therapy or pharmacy.

I was a psychology major in undergrad, it's pretty much like having a history degree. I couldn't find any high paying jobs. I went to grad school for a masters in educational psych and it helped a little...but then I decided to get another masters in statistics. I'm in my last semester..but what a difference! My resume was posted last week and so many responses and opportunities for high paying jobs in the business world are now available to me.

Just wanted you to know the real deal.

Best wishes.

Combine the History BA with a Masters in Library Science (sometimes now called Information Technology), and you will be in some demand if any good.

You can teach in public schools. If you stay in school long enough to get a Phd...you could try to be a professor. The bad thing about being a professor is that you would have to be willing to live almost anywhere that you might get a job.

try to think of jobs where you need to remember a bunch of facts and dates from hundreds of years ago.

Are you drawing a blank? That's because there are none.

While any college degree will give you some advantage in the job market simply by proving that you are at least not dumb (maybe even somewhat smart), it is much better to choose the career you want, then choose a college degree that leads directly to that career. You can always minor in history, take a double major, or you can just study history and read historical books for leisure.
