Lots of outdoor things to do in Alabama. Terrific lakes and beaches, beautiful mountains for hiking, and nice state parks.
In Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile, there's a pretty active arts and culture scene, with plenty of good restaurants and things to do. Auburn and Tuscaloosa are university towns, so they always have stuff going on.
And, of course, this time of year, college football takes over the social life of the state. Don't fight it. Just pick a team to like, invite yourself to some football watching parties, and make plenty of friends. Southerners are quite hospitable people, we've found. If you try to reach out to them, they'll take you under their wing.
All in all, we have a more active life in Birmingham than we did in Chicago. It's just a matter of how much energy and imagination you have.

Well, in a couple of weeks you can catch a home game of my beloved alma mater, the Mighty UAB Blazers. Until then, we can head to Dreamland and get some ribs, and catch a double feature at the Alabama.
