I, basically agree with Lakobos except for showers (shower only) are required to have 2" drains and newer washing machines require 2" drains since the pumps are now more powerful. These are in the new plumbing codes. PVC is the material of choice.

Schedule 40 PVC. Thats different than the stuff under your sink. Main drain lines need to be at least schedule 40 pvc.

In the U.S. it would be PVC. 1 1/4in. bathroom sink drain. 1 1/2in kitchen sink drain. 1 1/2in shower or tub drain (also for washer). 3 inch trunk line. These sizes are basic in most homes.

Depends where you are, In Canada we use A.B.S. In the U.S Ithinck it P.V.C.
