Some tampons are more difficult to insert than others. Cardboard applicators tend to be dry and do not insert as well as the plastic applicators. Try using a small amount of lubricant on the applicator, Vaseline or KY would be ok. Also, try using the small tampons, rather than the larger ones for heavy flow. It does take a little practice to position the tampon comfortably.

When I was your age putting in tampons was pretty hard for me too. Some things that helped me was:
*I bought the slim fit / teen fit tampons. They're narrower and generally smaller.
*I used tampons with plastic applicators. My favorite is the Tampax Pearl because they slide in soooo easily. Sometimes, girls don't react too well to the cardboard applicators.
*Relax when you're putting it in. Spread your legs pretty wide while sitting on the toilet. And when you put it in, don't just aim straight up - you're supposed to insert it at a 45 degree angle, which basically means, when you put the applicator in, kind of aim it up and toward the front.
*Make sure its in far enough. Don't worry, it won't get lost or stuck! If it's not in far enough, the cotton part that is sticking out can be irritating to your skin.
*Stay away from the scented tampons for now, since those end up irritating you and possibly causing pain if you are sensitive.
And no, its not bad to put your finger up there, as long as its clean and theres nothing under your nails!

Im 12 and i can finger myself, no problem. But i havent started my periods yet but when i do i am going to try a tampon. Maybe its because your body needs to get used to a tampon, tampon and finger are quite different if you think about it, hard/soft..thich/thin..etc. Just put the tampon up and "try" and forget about the pain, maybe even leave the tampon in for an hour or two so then you will know it just hurt the first time u were trying it. Experiment!...Good look. x

If you have a hard time inserting a tampon, try putting Vaseline or another kind of lubricant on the applicator.
Whether or not you put your finger inside yourself is your own personal business.

Try to relax when you are inserting it. You most likely tense up and it makes it uncomfortable to put it. Also, it could be the position you are in when you are trying to insert it. Trying moving different ways and I'm sure you will find something that works for you. Good Luck.

If you are having those kinds of problems then maybe don't use them or see a DR.
The finger bit I don't think we needed to know that.
