the division winners from the East, Central, and West division advance to the playoffs, and the wildcard is 1 team from the AL and 1 team from the NL with the best record that is not a division leader

The Wild Card was created in 1994 but did not see the light of day until the 1995 playoffs. The Wild Card team is the team that finishes second in each division that has the best record of the three divisions.
The Wild Card cannot play a team from their division in the first round of the playoffs. They can meet in the second round (and this has happened several times). In fact, Wild Card teams have won the World Series a few times (Florida twice, last in 2003, they did it first in 1997).

Its like another division for teams that arent in 1'st in their division.
Who ever who isnt 1st in their division goes to the Wild Card.
Which ever team has the best record thats in the Wild Card goes to the playoffs.

4 teams from each the National league and the American league make the post season.
3 division winners from each.
The next best record after the divisional winners gets into the playoffs.
right now its the Mariners in the American league.

An at-large (per league) postseason berth, awarded to the team with the best record which did not win a division title.
It's also a marketing gimmick, but as it has proven to be a very successful one, we won't belabor that aspect.
