i'm bored. and was thinking. Lidstrom won last year. discussion: how is this award given? what are the criterion used? is it subjective? or objective? based ONLY on stats, or a blend? i predict that Lidstroms' +/- will go down by around 10. just because Detroit has lost some offense. not a ton, but some. (some role players will have to step up). anyway, this isn't about the Wings. it's about ...

how heavily do the awardERs weigh the +/- rating in this award? what about total points?

and how often do 'they' change the members of the panel?

The award is voted on by a group of people known as Professional Hockey Writers Association.

The only criterion is that the player must be listed as a defenceman in the NHL Guide and Record Book. After that, it is entire;y up to the PHWA member to decide whom he likes (and doesn't like)

Each writer picks the five defeneceman he feels were the best, and puts their names in an ballot and forwards it to the NHL Offices in Montreal (that is where the award staff is).

Each 1st place vote gets 10 points
Each 2nd place vote gets 7 points
Each 3rd place vote gets 5 points
Each 4th place votes gets 3 points
Each 5th place vote gets 1 point

The winner of the Trophy is the person with the most votes.

The award has no finalists. There was a poster here recently who bashed a defencemen for not being a finalist, yet 7x that player (McCabe actually) has received votes.

At the NHL awards, the league lists the top 3 finishers in alphabetical order to generate excitement. THose aren't the finalists...they are the top three vote getters.

I don't know the answers to all of your questions, but I'd really like to know.

I think Lidstrom is always an early favorite. How long before they rename the trophy after him anyway?

I still wish they had an award for most offensive defenseman... since forwards have an award for most defensive forward. Maybe Gonchar, QB of the powerplay, would finally get recognized for his ability to play as less defense as possible for a defenseman. Lol.

The dead horse is the greatest defenseman in the world.

Added: Who is this Lindstrom character that everyone talks about? I have no idea who Lindstrom is. I do know of a Lidstrom.

I say Lindstrom has the best chance of winning but I'm going to predict an upset and go with Dion Phaneuf.

Rest assured, no one from the shitty Leafs, Penguins, Red Wings, Avs, Panthers, Predators, Lightning, Rangers, and Coyotes will win it.
