are the reason why intelligent people want to leave this country? If that question she was asked were true, 1/5 the country's population doesn't know where the U.S. is located on a map. It's a very scary thought if you ask me.

Ouch, Howie, was that supposed to hurt my feelings? Pardon me if it didn't. Just goes to show how stupid you are if you think this statistic is acceptable.

And just why should we cut her some slack? She's an embarrassment to this country. Because this country values looks over anything else, the country as a collective are made fun of by people in other countries. Forgive me if it pisses me off that I'm painted with the same brush that bimbo is.

The QUESTION is true. Sad to say, I have seen some of these people. Americans are self centered. We really do not think of much outside this country. Few of us speak other than English. We assume network news is all that happened that day as most of the country doesn't have cable. If the Army isn't there most assume other countries are on another planet.
Miss Teen SC, it must be remembered, is only 18 yrs. old and a blond. How together is she supposed to be at that age? If you are blond and beautiful, life is easier for you. They just think it isn't. You automatically get lots of credit just for showing up that everyone else must work hard for. But, if the rest of us could get it, we would take it, grabbing so fast it would be a blur.

Me too, it would have caught me off gaurd. I would have questioned it.
I can see 95% of the country being unable to find Montana on a map, but 20% doens't know a landmark like Florida.
Do these people have NO TV set, what did they do in the public schools. I mean this is DEFINATELY an indicator we need to homeschool kids.
I can see them maybe including all or part of Canada and Mexico into the country (hey, they are practically a part of our nation, like it or not), but to NOT KNOW FLORIDA
I mean I knew what Italy looked like when I was 8 years old. IT's a boot.
I don't think mOST of us here can find Lithuania on the map, but just about everyone here should be able to find Italy and Flordia.
But, hey, I know a High School graduate who thought Denmark was a city.
And has Howard shows the world, many girls think the Capital of New York is New Jersey.

I wouldn't say I truly agree with the research statistic stated, but I do know there is a severe decline in the teaching of geography (probably because it's not tested and the state tests emphaize reading, math, and science plus writing, so geography isn't even covered anymore), so many people don't know where countries are...However, the United States hasn't changed its name, so for them to not be able to find the US on a map, with it being as large as it is, I'd say they were just pretty stupid themselves. Now, as far as Miss Teen South Carolina goes, I think if she'd quit trying to use all those strategies they teach you to use to give your brain a chance to think and answer and concentrate on the question, she may not have sounded quite so much like a stupid dork. Her pre-pageant training was lacking in learning to answer impromptu questions, perhaps something they need to look at instead of just giving clues on how to give yourself time to think...She was an embarrassment, but not a reason for intelligent people to want to leave this country!!

I think that more than one-fifth of the country does not know where the U.S. is located., and are more familiar with the name, Paris Hilton, than anyone in public office.
The sheer size of the public schools, the large numbers of students attending, make the underfunded, testing-by-rote No Child Left Behind program a joke that should be abandoned as a failure.
Until we whittle down those classroom sizes, allow the teachers to teach with creativity and compassion, and make academic progress just as important as Sports in our schools, we are promoting ignorance and graduating many illiterates.

I want to leave this country because of the way it is ran, but bimbos don't make it any easier to stay either. I think right now, peoples biggest problem, is they are letting their egos take over their body, people focus on Power, Money, and Appearance more than they do anything else, causing power hungry rich plastic bimbos to populate the majority of our country. It is a very scary thought, but hey, what can you do?

Ya. When I watched the contest, Miss SC didnt come across as the smartest one there. Later on (after the show) she claimed that she didnt understand her question, so she just ramdomly made up an answer. But still, I agree with you 100%. It is a VERY scary thought that some of our very own US citisons cant find their own country on the map. I think it is a little bit sad if you ask me. . .

well... i dunno if she was just nervous... she answered the question again on tv the other day... and she said she was so nervous she never even heard the question they asked her.... who knows....
but if 1/5 of the people in the country don't know where it is honestly, that's said.... but where did that statistic come from... america is a hard country to miss... i can understand not knowing where the various states are.... miss teen sc sounded intelligent for an 18 otherwise that day on the today show..... but who knows what pressures does to you up there... i would not say that's the only reason why intelligent people leave though... better jobs are to be had abroad!

have you ever not heard or misunderstood a question? Did you see how her name was called, the crowd was cheering and she was in another world. Let's all give her a break- she drew a blank and screwed up. I have done it before- just not in front of millions of people. Intelligent people want to stay here and come here- we are not as free as I would like but we are still way ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to opportunity for the individual to thrive.
