The Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. The first woman was Russian as well, Valentina Tereshkova.
The first US astronaut was Alan Shepard. He, however, did not orbit. The US did not achieve orbit with an astronaut utnil a few years after Yuri Gagarin's first orbital flight.
