Scholar? Read Knuth's Art of Computer Programming
Else, go for, Don't Make Me Think, by Steve Krug (2-hour read) and Letting Go of the Words by Ginny Redish...these are both on website usability: VERY important if you CARE
Then for programming, get Dynamic HTML the Definitive Reference by Danny Goodman, as it covers all three - XHTML, javascript, and CSS (it's NOT a tutorial!)
Then begin with HTML and XHTML the Definitive Guide and go on from there...

Here's a great list of "Essential Language Agnostic Computer Programming Books" compiled by an Amazon user - http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Language-Agnostic-Computer-Programming/lm/RM2PTDDSWPCO4/
The Knuth and the Petzold works (top of the list) are classics.
