Does anyone regret naming their child a certain name because it became too common?

I don't know if I'd use the word regret but I wish it weren't as common now as it is. We named my daughter Michaela..her dad and I knew one person with that name and that was it all our lives and now it's freakin everywhere. My son's name is Greyson..again hubby and I knew one person (same guy) but spelled with an A. And now we hear it everywhere we go...matter of fact baby in the NICU next to my son was also named Grayson. Now the new neighbors one son...go figure. To make matters worse it's becoming more common as a girls name...

I haven't had children yet, but I have a list and any name that's on the top 1000 names list on the social security website doesn't make the cut....

A friend of mine named her daughter Madison 16 years ago.... now her daughter gets irritated hearing a bunch of 6-8 year olds getting talked to at the mall..... But even back then, the name Madison was at about 150-200 on the SS website... that's why I will choose something that's not even on the radar. I don't tell people what names I even like, and if I do on the rare occasion tell someone a name I like, I hope they have a negative reaction - that way I know they won't use the name themselves.

The last thing i wanted was to have my child be one in a sea of kids with the same name. to this day people i knew in grade school use either my first and last name or my last initial all the time. and there were only two of us!

personally I dont care for the names Kaden and Aiden and Braiden and all the other rhyming names, they seem too trendy for my taste. And everybody is going old fashioned for girls names now. So i flipped it and went old school with my boy, I named him Victor James. The doctors said he's the only Victor they know, and I like that. If the name becomes popular I'll get really annoyed because it will be like " I DID IT FIRST! KNOCK IT OFF!!!" haha. but what can you do. I wanted to name him Edsel, but the grandmas wouldnt let us. but Victor suits him well so I'm glad i named him that.

Probably. I know some people had the brilliant idea to name their child "Unique" and then found out there were two other girls in her grade with that name along with a So'unique.

If it was a name like Alex or James that was too common, I wouldn't probably mind. If it was one of those intentionally misspelled name that was supposed to be creative and special, it'd be embarrassing. I don't have kids though.

I named my 2 1/2 year old son Aidan after seeing the name on a baby list online, falling in love with it, and never actually hearing the name used elsewhere.
Now, we go to the doctor and when they call his name 3 boys stand up, LOL. As much as I don't care for common names, I don't regret it, it suits him.

It's funny b/c if our baby is a boy, we will probably end up naming him Connor. Another common name... BUT, what goes better with Aidan?!!

Sort of. When I was pregnant with my daughter I knew that I wanted to name her Maia. I'd had the name in my head for years and couldn't imagine naming her anything else. I thought it was a beautiful name, simple and somewhat unique; also it has a Hebrew origin and my husband is Jewish. She was born 6 years ago, and it seems like since then, every other little girl we see is called Maya (usually it's spelled differently at least!). I still love the name and it suits her but it does irritate me when we go to the playground or the store and I hear parents yelling the name!

No, but I regret letting my family talk me out of using the less common name as his first name instead of his middle name.

Haven't had my baby yet but I'm scared of that happening. Right now I'm thinking Conner, Noah, or Brody. Middle name has to be Eric after his daddy. I guess after the fact there is nothing you can do and its their name even if its someone else's too.I was one of five Amanda's in my high school class and we only had a graduating class of 32, i know how frustrating it can be.

My name and my partners names are rare. I mean, if I told you, you would say, "your right, never heard of that." so for us, we really WANTED a traditional name. I did look up the social security website to see the top 100 names in the US for any given year and we picked one that was #62....I am very glad nobody ever says "what?" when I tell them her name, (which was always done to me.)

I named my daughter Elizabeth Kylie- Elizabeth after my mother, Kylie after a friend. I don't regret naming Lizzie that at all- it may be a common name, but it has real meaning behind it. Also, I can't imagine calling her anything but Lizzie!
