Any ideas why since they are in the middle East.

I never noticed they were trying to be a hockey power. They've been an IIHF member since 1974 and they have been at the World Championships D Pool on a few occassions. Usually it's a home for Russian players of jewish ancestry to play after they have outlived their star power in Russia.

There was a CBC documentary in Canada several years ago about a group of Russian Jews from Montreal donating equipment with some Muscovites in Tel Aviv to help develop minor hockey in Israel.

so they can have an extra advantage over their Arab neighbors. every little edge helps.
