yes we need to do something. I am starting to wonder if we cant install some sort of beeper on the car that will alert parents there is still someone in the car. Not sure exactly how these work but they have started installing them on school buses after several kids got left on buses. We do need to pass a law making it a criminal offense

In many of these cases, it was purely accidental, and the hell a parent has to go through knowing they caused their child's death is something none of us could ever truly know. First degree murder? You have to prove intent. The woman in Batavia...as happens in so many other cases...was just a woman who for whatever reason was in a hurry that day, perhaps her brain in a different place, whatever...she forgot she had her sleeping child in the car. This happens frequently - either due to a change in routine (the other parent usually drops off the child at daycare for instance) or they're really preoccupied or something. There are also for certain instances where a parent is obviously being neglectful - (i.e., the examples of hair/nails done, or perhaps the parent decides to go on a drinking binge, etc.). Rather than making yet another law when there are already so many on the books, think about measures that could be taken to prevent this from happening (at least in the case of a forgetful parent). Technology is advanced enough today that I'm sure someone with some brains could come up with perhaps a sensor in the childseat, in the car, something which will alert the parent when the child has been left behind. This is a bit more proactive.

I think in any child endangerment case the punishments should much much harsher. You would think people would learn their lessons. There have been enough of these cases that nobody can say they didnt realize. And besides that ....if a child is not responsible enough to get out of the car when he feels hot then he is not old enough to stay in the car alone. I still only let my 12 and 14 year old stay in car if they are both with me and I have to run into a store for just a few minutes. If only 1 of them is with me for some reason or another then I make them come in with me. Call me paranoid but I don't like to take any chances.

Most people who leave their children in cars do so unintentionally, therefore, creating stiffer penalties (what can be worse than losing a child at your own hand?!?) will not work. Preventive measures, like having some sort of notification device that there is weight in the back seat above and beyond the car seat weight that goes off when you open the driver's door will go a lot farther toward ending this problem. Interesting that the incidence of this behavior increased when it was mandated that children should be in the back seat in a car seat and, while youngest, facing rear.

I think that leaving a child alone in the car should be taken as seriously as when you leave them home...if not more!
1) If you leave your child alone in a car and thankfuly there is no death, the result should be to have your rights taken away, take parenting classes, pay a fine and/or jail time. Then compensate the foster care system for the cost of caring for your child(ren) until an adoption can take place.
2) If you leave your child alone in the vehicle and the result is unfortunately death, it should be treated as 1st degree murder. You knew the possibility of death and you still left your child alone in the vehicle with that knowledge then it is murder.
I do not know why it is happening like it is. Find a babysitter, and if you cannot find a sitter and you cannot take your child in with you then cancel what you wanted to do. The care for a child is more important and should take priority over geting your nails done/paying a bill etc.

Leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle is already a serious offense here in New York. Doing the same with a pet is considered less serious, but still not a wrist-slap offense.

The ones who say it was an accident....you must be pretty freakin stupid to leave your kid in a car on a hot summer day by accident.
Im willing to bet they didnt forget that Big Mac in the car. They snatched that up and slurped it down with no problems. But Junior? Forget him.

I was left alone in the car all the time. I'm just fine. I guess it's because us girls can deal with the heat better.
