Pretty sure back in those days it didn't matter at all.

Testifying under oath in court falsely that someone committed a crime is perjury.

Since you are talking about a puritanical society, you should go straight for the Bible. One of the 10 commandments says thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

only if they falsely accuse them knowingly, and there's evidence of them knowing. i believe its called defamation of character or something like that. you should look up on that a little more though.
