1.) If 3 is a solution of 5x - mx - 8 = 0, what is the value of m?

2.) Find the number of integer solutions: | x - 3 | is less than or equal to 24.

How would I solve these two??
Thanks.

In number one, "3 is a solution" means that X can equal 3. Just put a 3 in where you see an X and solve for m. Remember to follow your order of operations and also remember that whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other.

You basically solve the second one the same way - get X by itself on one side of the <= sign

The vertical lines around x-3 means you need the absolute value.

1)
Just plug in the three for x (since it is a solution)
5*3 - 3m - 8 = 0
and now you can solve for m

2)
You need all integers where x-3 <= 24 AND where x-3 >= -24
Just count 'em up
