My son's last name was changed to my husband's over the summer. About 2 wks before school started I gave them the court order and his ss card w/his new name. But now school has begun and they are still using his old last name.
My question is, approximately how long should it take for the school records to reflect his new name? I had to fill out forms for him from school and I put his new name and he said the school was not too happy about that. But I certainly wasn't going to write his name as it used to be. Legally and actually, his name has changed, right? What exactly takes so long to change it on his records? It has been about 3 weeks now since Igave them the necessary paperwork.

I got my last name changed when I was in high school. They did it instantaneously. You just need to put pressure on the right people at the school administration. Legally, your son isn't going to that school, cuz legally his names not right. Bug the hell out of them till it goes through.

once you handed over a copy of the court order they were to change it then and there and start using his new last name.there is no time process on anything except waiting for the ss card and new birth certificate, they are the only things that take time to get new of.i went thru this myself personally 15 yrs ago when i was 15 and i changed my last name legally and the school had it switched that day after court.you should contact the school and lwet them know that they need to change your sons last name and start using the new last name when addressing him and his records.

That depends on the school. It should have been done already. Maybe they are busy doing other things and consider it a low priority or maybe they messed up when processing the paperwork. Your best course of action is to ask the school administration.

Most school systems have a main administrative office (apart from the actual school). Call them and ask what the problem is.
